Stair Climb: Step Up for Kids Recap

As I mentioned in my Preview post, I just complete doing the Aon Stair Climb for the 4th time!

This climb is close to my heart because it was the first fitness event I ever did. Over the years though, things have been predictable for me since I’ve done it so many times. The first year I did it (2012), I had a really early wake up call, but because of that, I had access to a ton of food at the end! I mean, I’m talking deep dish pizza and ice cream! Then, they changed my start time the same year the hospital changed their name (2013), so although I appreciate the later time and therefore I can sleep in, I have also noticed there is always a decrease of things available to finishers at the end. I don’t know if it is because it’s later and things run out or there is less sponsors also. Just something I’ve noticed.

Also, the swag is not much. I get the same shirt every year, it’s just a different color, and it’s cotton, not a tech one. There’s no medal either. Although I don’t have to pay, but it is $50 to register, and $100 minimum donation, so about the same as the Hancock and SkyRise and I feel I get a bit more stuff at the end. I know people don’t do these events for the swag, but I guess since I’ve done more now, it’s just an interesting comparison. There also isn’t as many photographers at this one as other ones I’ve done, none at the step and repeat (except to use your own phone) Not much entertainment before you climb while waiting in line,

I will say, one thing I do like about this race is that stairs! they are wide stairways and are concrete the whole way! And it’s always cute to see the kids do it, makes you wish you could go as fast as they do! Parking is reasonable also, $10! And day of packet pick up is allowed. Plus, the top of the Aon isn’t a place open to the public, so it’s pretty cool you are up there! Gear and coat check are the same location also.

I mainly do this event just because I can and able to through work, and it’s become a fun thing for me and my co workers to do yearly. Would I do it if I can’t do it through work? No, mainly since I’ve done it before so many times already.

Besides the poor planning, and things not going my way (my fitbit ran out of battery! ahh of course on a day I do a lot of steps!) I am proud of my co workers doing the climb again and recruiting more people!

And can you believe since it was snowing/cloudy, this was my view at the top!?

Stair Climb: Step Up for Kids Preview

On Sunday, 1/25, I tackled the Aon Center for the 4th time by doing the Step up for kids stair climb! 1643 steps/80 stories for the kids!

This race is special to me, for it was my first ever fitness related event that I ever did. It is an event my work always does, but since I was away at college, I was never able to do it since I would be back on campus. After graduation, I knew I had to do it just once!

I remember when I told people about it, they were puzzle and not many people know about stair climbs (same as me, I didn’t know it was possible!) They mainly think I am insane, that I would get to the top of a building by taking all of the stairs rather than an elevator. But, it was for a good cause! This supports Lurie’s Children’s Hospital!

I remember the first year I did it (2012), I was kinda nervous. I didn’t work out or exercise regularly (not like I can say that today, it’s be a hostile relationship!) But, I had just gotten back from Haiti, where I had to hike up and down a mountain almost every day, so I felt that was good practice.

I remember the goal of the first climb was just to complete. I googled and read everything I could about stair climbs, and many people said to train for it as if you are training for a 5k, to make sure you go slowly (it’s very tempting to sprint but you will wind yourself out!) and at an even pace, some people recommend to take a lozenge before the race since many complain of a dry throat. And another one, which is think is the most important, is to place your whole foot on the stair to prevent falls.

I told myself, that if I was able to complete this, that I would try to do all of the other ones in Chicago!

Every year since the first time I did it, I have been able to recruit more people from work to do it w/me! That has made the event a little bit more fun, and I love seeing other people taking on a challenge!

I have no pics from the first time I did the race, I was too shy to ask someone to get a pic of me 😦

But, I do have them from other years!

weekly recap

i can’t believe it-i actually have something to report! not much, but something!

Monday, 1/19- 3 mile run

Tuesday, 1/20-nothing

Wednesday, 1/21-nothing

Thursday, 1/22-nothing

Friday, 1/23-nothing

Saturday, 1/24-nothing

Sunday, 1/25-aon stair climb!

this week was interesting, i ran outside on monday bc the temps have been ok for chicago land weather, but one thing i had to face was unclear trails. i ran on the prairie path, and it was tough and i almost fell 2 times!

the stair climb i had on sunday was planned, but plans were not finalized until saturday, hence why there was no post about a preview of the race. i was kinda of frustrated by the lack of planning from my friends on this, but what could i do. there will be a preview and a recap post on it this week!

this week of school is showing me how tough it is to work out after clinical, especially when i have to be there so early for rounds. i think i need to rearrange my work out plans. also, these past 2 weeks of school have been more so like a syllabus week since it we started school on a wednesday and had to deal w/having MLK off, so all of the schedules were off for a bit. this week will now be how a typical week will be.

finally, an announcement-ish!

so yesterday, after what felt like an FOREVER, Nike said something! after all of my months of research!

here’s their announcement:
http://news.nike.com/news/nike-women-s-event-series

they updated the website! check it out:
http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/women/events

and youtube videos that pump you UP!

they updated info on both their new women’s event series, and the NTC tour! But, since the NTC tour is going no where near me (why dissing the midwest!? Chicago is AWESOME!)

I was more concern about the running race events.

So yay to dates! And all of the cities being back up on the website! But, it would be nice to know about the distances, like i mentioned before, the races are either 5k (they def just added that), 10k, 15k or half marathon.

The main reason i would consider Toronto is i have a friend in Ann Arbor, and would like to do a race (meaning a nike half marathon, w/tiffanys at the end). Since she doesn’t live too far away from Toronto, we talked about the possibility of doing it there, like a girls road trip.

W/the race distance being a 15k now, i’m not too sure anymore. It’s not a new distance to me (since i just did the hot chocolate 15k).  Although it says that each race will have a custom finisher’s necklace, with all of the new changes, we don’t know what to expect, and i don’t want to fork over all of that money and be let down.

Although i’m not too excited about the details that were released today, i’m not surprised either. they did say they want to bring this race to more people, and doing that does mean to have other distances besides a half marathon, and other locations. Nike is an internationally wide known brand, so it also makes sense to bring together all of the races they have always had together, a series of events. it’s quite impressive that they are changing a lot and bringing it to 5 continents in 1 year! I really do think they are trying to complete w/other series like the Rock’n’Roll one.

I guess my main question is-what locations have what distances? And which locations will have a guy in a tuxedo w/my Tiffanys necklace? 😉

And, since they marked certain locations that it would be their first time hosting a race/event, it makes me wonder-will they change the locations every year?

I know the main reason you run a race shouldn’t be about the bling at the end, but let’s be real, that’s how many people heard about the race (that’s how I did) and that’s what a lot of other people do it for-the swag at the end is what they want! And it’s more intriguing since you can’t buy it!

So yeah, Toronto, I’m interested in seeing what are the race details, and keep an open mind, but i’m not too committed to it yet. Toronto is much closer to me than SF, and to think, just a few years ago, there was only 1 option-the SF race!

Chicago Eats: Firecakes Donut [Repeat Customer]

One day, I was grabbing dinner with my friend in River North, and we past by a bakery. At the time, I was really full from dinner, but I made a note to remember the place-Firecakes.

When I walked by, I noticed they had a sign saying “It’s almost Ice Cream Donut Sandwich Time!” and that intrigue me. At first, I was kind of grossed out, but I was willing to give it a shot.

So one hot day, I walked over there and tried it!

I know in the pic, it looks like a stick of butter. But in reality, it’s a sheet of ice cream they cut. And it was really GOOD! I couldn’t believe it, it’s was so light and fluffy, and perfect. I don’t know how else to describe it, but you need to go and try it for yourself.

Unfortunately, this is a seasonal item, so you have to wait until spring time to get it again. And they don’t serve this at all hours, you have to come around lunch time and then you can get it.

But, they do have pretty good donuts! Another time, I got the Vanilla Iced, and it didn’t disappoint.

So far, I would say Firecakes is one of my fave places.

Chicago Eats: Glazed and Infused [Repeat Customer]

Another Chicago donut place is Glazed and Infused. This is another place that I don’t really get to go to that often since it’s no where near me when I’m in the city. One day, my train became an express one, so I had time to walk over here.

What does stink is my job doesn’t start super early, so a lot of times, when I arrive to these places, I don’t have many choices left (and donuts are harder to get to since they are only open in the morning) this is something that makes me like cupcakes a little bit more…

But luckily, they had red velvet left. Red velvet is my all time fave flavor, I pick it for anything! So I knew I had to get it!

And it was awesome.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/91a/67128570/files/2015/01/img_6915.jpg

Another flavor I really want to try is the creme brûlée, but I have a feeling that is a pretty popular flavor, hence why I didn’t see it. Oh well.

What cracks me up about this place is their art work, this is the one at their Wicker Park location.

Nike specialty shop

Not too long ago, there was an announcement that Nike was popping up in Macy’s stores.

I was really excited about this, and I went over to Macy’s one day after working in Chicago to check it out! And then I heard they were opening one closer to me in Oakbrook Mall and I got super excited.

Both places are really cool, and the main difference is the State St one (which is in Chicago) is MUCH bigger.

Here are some pics:

Look at all of that lovely merchandise! I want it all! Of course, my wallet would hate me though, being a broke nursing student 😦

I then went to visit the one close to my home at Oakbrook mall, it’s still awesome, but not as much stuff or space, and after seeing the one in Chicago first, I was feeling… underwhelmed? Is that a word?

2014-11-12 19.10.12

Yes, I only have one pic bc I was able to put it all in just one. I’m def jealous of the Chicago one, but I’m glad that this is this by me. I haven’t taken of the services that they offer at either locations, I can’t seem to find much besides what they put on that blackboard by the fitting room (if they update it) but hopefully, they will post something on social media and if I have the time, I will go! I would like to try the bra fitting, pant hemming, personal stylist (that could really hurt my wallet!) and the NTC classes!
